Generational wisdom for our modern life… one garden at a time

There’s just something
about gardening

It’s the solitude and oneness with nature you feel when your gloves are in the dirt and you’re tending to your seedlings. It’s the beauty that surrounds you, from the carefully curated bed by your front door to the brilliant bouquet of wild blooms adorning your table. It’s the platter of spicy greens, pulled-from-the-garden beets, and fresh herbs providing your family with a delectable meal (jam-packed with nutrients, because, of course). It’s knowing that each seed you plant – each vegetable you harvest – lowers your carbon footprint and nurtures the earth that has nurtured you and will continue to nurture your family.

Even with how intrinsic gardening is to our human nature, so many of us missed out on generational knowledge on how to best cultivate plants for sustenance and beauty. Few of us have had the privilege of kneeling next to our mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, learning from them which seeds are best to sow together … how to tend a garden in the lean winter months … and how best to prune our apple trees.

The result? A lot of hard work, a hefty dose of overwhelm and confusion, and often disappointing results. That’s where Idlewild Gardens comes in.
